Biographical Information

Curtis moved throughout
Southern United States during his childhood, as the son of a
pastor. He earned his B.A. in Art from the University of
Mississippi in 1994. Although trained as an artist, he decided to
work with youth and families as Youth Director at a church in
Alabama. He soon realized that he needed further equipping to offer
parents and teenagers significant and effective help. Curtis and
his wife, Lisa, moved to Orlando, Florida to study at Reformed
Theological Seminary, where he completed his M.A. in Counseling, as
well as, additional training in Theological and Biblical studies.
Curtis has
since worked in a variety of Christian and secular settings. He has
worked with Northland Community Church, Willow Creek Church, St.
Paul’s Presbyterian Church, and Discovery Counseling. His roll in
all of these Christian counseling settings included development of
the counseling ministries, individual, couple, and family
counseling, as well as, facilitating small groups and conducting
seminars. He has consulted with church leaders and counselors to be
more effective in helping others. Curtis’ counseling ministry has
exceeded beyond the counseling room to educate, train, and guide
others in the helping ministry. Many of the issues that Curtis has
worked with in these settings have included histories of sexual
abuse, depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, broken
relationships, blended families, sexual addictions, adolescent
behavioral problems, and marital problems.
In the
secular setting, Curtis was worked with impoverished and
underprivileged families, children, and adolescents. He has worked
with middle school students and their families through an intensive
day treatment program. He has experience conducting mental health
evaluations for abused and neglected children through the Department
of Children and Families, as well as, juvenile offenders through the
Department of Juvenile Justice. Curtis has also been a consultant,
staff trainer, and Clinical Supervisor for programs within the
Department of Juvenile Justice. In these settings, Curtis gained
experience with issues including Conduct Disorder, substance abuse,
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (grief and trauma), Bipolar Disorder,
ADHD, and general behavioral problems with children and adolescents.
Curtis
enjoys counseling with individuals and couples, facilitating small
groups, consulting with pastors and leaders, and educating others
through seminars, classes, and large group settings. Curtis uses a
variety of counseling approaches to address the unique needs of each
client. Some of these approaches include Rogerian, Object Relations
Therapy, Gestalt, Cognitive/Behavioral, and Motivational
Interviewing. He seeks to help each client find accurate and
relevant information, solutions for their problems, meaning for
their life, and restored relationships with God, others, and
themselves.
