Licensed Mental Health Counselor MH7421
Biographical Information

Curtis moved throughout Southern United States during his childhood, as the son of a pastor.  He earned his B.A. in Art from the University of Mississippi in 1994.  Although trained as an artist, he decided to work with youth and families as Youth Director at a church in Alabama.  He soon realized that he needed further equipping to offer parents and teenagers significant and effective help.  Curtis and his wife, Lisa, moved to Orlando, Florida to study at Reformed Theological Seminary, where he completed his M.A. in Counseling, as well as, additional training in Theological and Biblical studies.

Curtis has since worked in a variety of Christian and secular settings.  He has worked with Northland Community Church, Willow Creek Church, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, and Discovery Counseling.  His roll in all of these Christian counseling settings included development of the counseling ministries, individual, couple, and family counseling, as well as, facilitating small groups and conducting seminars.  He has consulted with church leaders and counselors to be more effective in helping others.  Curtis’ counseling ministry has exceeded beyond the counseling room to educate, train, and guide others in the helping ministry.  Many of the issues that Curtis has worked with in these settings have included histories of sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, broken relationships, blended families, sexual addictions, adolescent behavioral problems, and marital problems.

In the secular setting, Curtis was worked with impoverished and underprivileged families, children, and adolescents.  He has worked with middle school students and their families through an intensive day treatment program.  He has experience conducting mental health evaluations for abused and neglected children through the Department of Children and Families, as well as, juvenile offenders through the Department of Juvenile Justice.  Curtis has also been a consultant, staff trainer, and Clinical Supervisor for programs within the Department of Juvenile Justice.  In these settings, Curtis gained experience with issues including Conduct Disorder, substance abuse, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (grief and trauma), Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and general behavioral problems with children and adolescents.

Curtis enjoys counseling with individuals and couples, facilitating small groups, consulting with pastors and leaders, and educating others through seminars, classes, and large group settings.  Curtis uses a variety of counseling approaches to address the unique needs of each client.  Some of these approaches include Rogerian, Object Relations Therapy, Gestalt, Cognitive/Behavioral, and Motivational Interviewing.  He seeks to help each client find accurate and relevant information, solutions for their problems, meaning for their life, and restored relationships with God, others, and themselves.
